Girl Talk Initiative

Girl Talk is an initiative launched by BecomingKids at Cloetesville Primary School on the outskirts of Stellenbosch. The school caters for around 700 learners from a poor community.

BecomingKids is an early intervention programme focusing on high-risk children living in the Cloetesville area. It is managed by Stellumthombo and addresses the needs of the children through a holistic approach focusing on the physical, social and emotional well-being of each child. The programme is based on the philosophy that children need to be children and strives to create a safe space where they can flourish as individuals. Visit their website at   https://stellumthombo.co.za/

The Girl Talk initiative is aimed at 11- to 14-year-old girls who start to menstruate. Because of their difficult financial circumstances most of the girls lack the basic hygienic necessities to deal with this major development in their lives. Many girls use newspaper when they menstruate and as a result stay away from school during their periods.

BecomingKids, with a sponsorship from Proud Partners, decided to become involved and restore the girls' dignity. They organized a Girl Talk event at the school for 44 of the girls. Arina Scheepers, the driving force behind BecomingKids, delivered an educational and motivational talk, and volunteer Alta van Zyl led the girls in song and the latest dance movements. A great time was had by all!

Every girl also received a hamper to the value of R220 containing 3 specially designed menstruation panties with 9 pads. These pads are washable and can be reused for 5 years.

Due to the massive success of this initiative, Proud Partners wishes to implement it in other disadvantaged communities as well. If anyone is interested in sponsoring and hosting such an event in their area, please contact us. Proud Partners is willing to lend a helping hand with the necessary arrangements.
