Cape Town’s first Consular Ball was a glittering affair that took place on 17 November 2012 at the Pavilion at the V&A Waterfront. Premier Helen Zille was the guest of honour at this black tie event which was attended by Consulates from 23 countries, together with their guests. Well-known TV presenter Dr Michael Moll was the MC while famous singer Nianell enthralled the guests with her voice. An unconventional auction raised R205 000 that was all donated to four local charities: Durbanville Children’s Home, Cape Times Bursary Fund, Proud Partners and Ons Plek. A splendid time was had by all the guests, and it was decided to make the Consular Ball an annual event.

Some of the unusual items that was auctioned off included:

- A personal master chef class with one of South Africa’s top chefs, George Jardine of the award winning restaurant, Jordan. He taught the winner how to prepare any dish of his choice.

- A game of golf with ex Springboks Toks van der Linde and Breyten Paulse at one of South Africa’s most prestigious golf courses – De Zalze Golf Estate in Stellenbosch. It also included accommodation for 1 night on the Golf Estate.

- One of South Africa’s top 10 chef’s – Bertus Basson from the award winning restaurant, Overture – came to the winner’s house to cook a magnificent dinner for 6 people, and as a special touch, he supplied the wine as well.

- A chance to appear in famous crime writer Deon Meyer’s new feature film in a small role specially written for the winner by Deon.
