Mathematics Support Project

When the numbers began to add up.

Eight volunteers. One determined organiser. And a mathematics pass rate of 94.4%.

In 2019, Nolubabalo Noji was determined to give learners the extra help they needed to succeed in mathematics. Her solution was an intensive study camp during the June school holidays, where eight volunteer mathematics teachers and Stellenbosch University students provided individual tuition, helped learners tackle difficult problems and worked through past examination papers.

Proud Partners contributed towards the cost of accommodation and study facilities, but there were still meals, transport and other expenses to consider.

Not one to be discouraged, Nolubabalo organised a fundraising campaign, including a Funky Socks and Hats concert performed by the learners themselves.

The result? A remarkable 94.4% pass rate, which even encouraged more learners to choose mathematics as a subject.

Proud Partners subsequently treated the eight volunteer tutors to a celebratory lunch, presenting each with a Certificate of Appreciation.

Although COVID-19 prevented the camp from taking place in 2020, the volunteers continued helping learners through weekend classes.

It's remarkable what one determined woman, eight generous volunteers and a little community spirit can achieve.

Nolubabalo, we salute you.
