Tygerberg  Children's  Choir
These "Ambassadors in Harmony" as they are also known, are one of the most formidable forces in choir music on the planet. Through its music, the Tygerberg Children’s Choir wishes to reach out, educate and encourage.

The Choir comprises 70 to 76 highly talented boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 14 years, and since its establishment in 1972 has had numerous tours, radio and television appearances and won various international awards.

Its founder is Etienne Smit, a former headmaster of DF Malan High School in Bellville and chairman of the Tygerberg Eisteddfod. Hendrik D Loock, a member of the Stellenbosch University Choir, has been the conductor since the establishment of the Choir. For the past 46 years “Oom Hennie” as he is affectionately called by his choir members, together with his wife Theresa, the Choir’s accompanist, has been the driving force behind its unprecedented success.

The Choir has undertaken 13 international tours and has participated in 8 international competitions. In seven of them, the Choir walked away with the laurels. It was also crowned as South Africa's best children's choir and has performed before heads of state and royalty, including Pope John Paul 2, Queen Elizabeth II, King Gustave of Sweden, President Bill Clinton and the former President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela. It also performed at the inauguration of President Thabo Mbeki and Princess Alexandra of Denmark.

The Choir also performed at the annual Consular Ball held by Proud Partners in 2017. It was a touching performance and the guests from more than 20 countries were enthralled by the children’s pure voices. Proud Partners has subsequently decided to further its involvement with this remarkable group of children.

The Choir was to participate in the World Choir Games , but some of the less privileged children could not afford the costs involved. Proud Partners sponsored the total costs of 3 of the children to enable them to participate.

They returned triumphantly as champions from the very successful 2018 World Choir Games held from 4 - 14 July in Pretoria, where more than 300 choirs from 59 countries (including China, USA, Austria, Korea, Norway, Greece, Denmark and many others) took part in more than 50 concerts and over 400 competition performances.

It was the first-ever World Choir Games to be hosted in Africa, and the Choir did us proud by winning 4 gold medals in 2 categories. It also won gold in the category Religious Music with Accompaniment. The Choir is now officially the best Children's Choir in the world according to the Interkultur ranking.

We at Proud Partners congratulate this magnificent choir and are proud to be associated with it. Follow the Choir on its website at
